Susannah Kolstad, PCD(DONA), Mother Roaster, and Educator serving Washington DC and Northern Virginia Areas including Arlington County, Alexandria City, Fairfax County, and beyond.
I am a DONA Certified Postpartum Doula providing support to new families in the Northern Virginia and Washington DC are including Alexandria City, Arlington County, Fairfax County, and beyond. As a postpartum doula, I provide support to help parents rest and feel confident in the care they provide for their new baby.
In 2011, I welcomed my first son into this world. My birth experience was not what I had wanted or expected. After the birth, I experienced many of the challenges that many new mothers experience from baby blues to breastfeeding challenges to returning to work. When I became pregnant in 2013, I surrounded myself with women in the birth community including midwives, doulas, lactation consultants and childbirth educators who showed me that we can have the empowering birth and postpartum experience that we want. During this time, I realized that I too wanted to assist women during the postpartum experience. My second birth and postpartum experience was empowering and full of joy.
Now, I dedicate my time to providing assistance to families in nurturing them through some of the most beautiful and challenging weeks of their lives. As a postpartum doula, I provide the care that a new family would have traditionally experienced. I provide a warm smile, a gentle touch, and an extra pair of hands. I help take the burden off the parents wherever I can so that they can focus on caring for their family or prepare for the birth of their baby or babies. I provide assistance and encouragement as they establish a breastfeeding relationship. I help them get the rest and nourishment that the family needs. I support families throughout the Northern Virginia and Washington DC areas including Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church, McLean, Fairfax, Springfield, Burke and beyond.
So here is a little more information about me. I studied Biology at the University of Rochester. I also was fortunate to be selected to be a Take Five Scholar where I studied the Visual Representations of Women in Popular Culture. While at U of R, I met my husband. We have been married almost 7 years and have two sons, 4 years old and 1 year old. Before I became a postpartum doula, I was a litigation paralegal at a large Intellectual Property law firm in downtown Washington, D.C. for almost 9 years. I supported attorneys in cases that focused on trademark litigation. I later worked as a paralegal specialist in the Solicitor’s Office at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. After the birth of my second child, I began pursuing my passion. I completed my training to be a postpartum doula as well as a mother roaster through the Sacred Postpartum movement. When I am not supporting families or caring for my own children, I sing with a band, Ein Lanu Z’man, at my synagogue, Agudas Achim Congregation.
